National Party

Traditionally representing rural voters, it was originally called the Country Party, but adopted the name National Country Party in 1975 and changed to its present name in 1982. Federally, in New South Wales, and to an extent Victoria, it has generally been the minor party in the traditional coalition with the Liberal Party of Australia.

Independents

Independents have only occassionally been elected to the federal Parliament of Australia, and are usually former members of one the main political parties, the Australian Labor Party, the Liberal Party of Australia or the National Party of Australia. In the previous term, three independents sat in the Australian House of Representatives: Peter Andren, Tony Windsor and Bob Katter from Queensland.
